Sri Lankan long distance runner Gamini Sugathadasa won the gold medal in the 55-59 age category at the 130th Boston Marathon.

Sugathadasa completed the 42.195 km race in two hours, 36 minutes and 32 seconds. The event, first held in 1897, is one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious marathons – and is part of the Abbott World Marathon Majors.

This year’s race attracted over 30,000 participants from across the world. The Boston Marathon – known for its challenging hilly course – marked Sugathadasa’s sixth appearance at the famed race.

He also won a bronze medal at the 2025 New York Marathon while this year’s performance is the best by a Sri Lankan in his age category at the event in Boston.

Sugathadasa migrated to the US in 1999 and is currently employed at the Four Seasons Hotel in Las Vegas. He took up long-distance running in his early 40s.

His achievement marks Sri Lanka’s growing presence in international endurance events.
