The six lion cubs born at Ridiyagama Safari Park in Hambantota have officially received their names, thanks to a unique initiative where children from across the island were invited to submit suggestions.
Having received over 4,000 entries, the chosen names were announced on 12 February at an event held under the patronage of the Director General of the Zoological Gardens Department. Three of the participants who had submitted names were also present.
The event enabled the public to form a special bond with the cubs and celebrate Sri Lanka’s wildlife conservation efforts.
Born to lionesses Dora and Lara, the cubs include one male (Megha) and five females (Tara, Agra, Bhumi, Akira and Elsa). The names reflect both cultural significance and the cubs’ personalities, with all six reportedly thriving and in excellent health.
Ridiyagama Safari Park, the first of its kind in Sri Lanka, spans 200 hectares and is a protected natural environment where animals can roam freely. Visitors can explore the park in protected vehicles, witnessing wildlife in their natural habitats.
