Uber recently launched its flagship sustainability initiative Uber Green, in Colombo. The city proudly joins over 170 metropolitan areas worldwide in embracing eco-friendly transportation.

With a few quick taps on the Uber app, riders can now book rides in electric vehicles (EVs), paving the way for a greener future here in Sri Lanka. In doing so, Uber says it aims to accelerate its transition to zero emission mobility globally on its platform by 2040.

This exciting announcement was made by Uber’s Sri Lanka-born CFO Prashanth Mahendra-Rajah, alongside cricket legend and national cricket coach Sanath Jayasuriya who was rider zero for Uber Green in Colombo.

In the coming months, Uber plans to expand this initiative across Sri Lanka, making green rides accessible to more citizens. Mahendra-Rajah believes that people are increasingly aware of planetary health and recognise it as a pressing issue that requires collective action.

Uber’s commitment to sustainability has been recognised by the science based targets initiative (SBTi), which has endorsed its ambitious emissions reduction goals. SBTi defines best practices in target setting, and assesses and approves progress.
