Sri Lanka delivered a strong showing at the 2026 Australian Athletics Championships in Sydney, with para-athletes Nuwan Indika and Pradeep Somasiri returning with a medal apiece after competing across international classifications from 9 to 12 April.
Indika, a seasoned T44 category long jumper and sprinter affiliated with the Sri Lanka Army, produced a winning effort of 6.37 metres to secure gold in the long jump. He has been a consistent performer on the para-athletics circuit in recent years with previous podium finishes at Asian and World Para-level competitions highlighting his experience in both sprint and field events.
Somasiri, competing in the T46 1,500m, added to his growing reputation as one of Sri Lanka’s leading middle-distance para athletes. A former Asian Para Games gold medallist and multi-time international finalist, he timed 3:59 to take bronze after a tightly contested race.
The duo’s performances added to Sri Lanka’s steady presence in para-athletics with both athletes continuing to build on earlier breakthroughs while competing against a strong global field.
