The fully modernised Pettah Central Bus Stand has officially reopened following a 200 day renovation project completed ahead of schedule.

Executed at a cost of Rs. 424 million with the technical and labour contributions of the Sri Lanka Air Force, the terminal is now equipped to serve approximately 75,000 daily passengers and nearly 2,000 buses.

The structural upgrades include a ground floor dedicated to streamlined bus operations, while the first floor features air conditioned rest areas for transport staff, retail spaces and modern sanitary facilities. The second floor has been repurposed to house administrative offices, a modern auditorium and specialised residential facilities for schoolchildren.

Beyond physical repairs, the renovation introduces major technological enhancements such as a comprehensive CCTV monitoring system and real-time digital display screens at a modern information centre.

To ensure the facility maintains high standards, the Ministry of Defence has committed to providing maintenance support for the first year.
