Sri Lanka born Australian politician Cassandra Fernando has been reelected as a member of parliament for the seat of Holt in Victoria, representing the Labor Party. Her victory came as Labor, led by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, won a second consecutive term with a clear majority at the 3 May federal election.

Representing Holt since 2022, Fernando is known for her background in worker advocacy, having previously represented retail and fast food chain employees, in their fight for better pay and conditions. She has also volunteered as a tutor for migrants and refugees from non-English-speaking backgrounds, supporting their integration and success down under.

Speaking after her reelection, Fernando expressed gratitude and pride in serving a community that shaped her early years. She highlighted the importance of fairness, equality and compassion in her campaign, and reaffirmed a commitment to delivering results for her constituents.

Her priorities for the next term include improving local infrastructure, expanding access to healthcare, reducing Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS) debt and increasing support for families through childcare initiatives.
