Thirteen year old Kael Liyanage made history by winning the bronze medal in the Super Junior category at the 2025 International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC) Pistol Caliber Carbine (PCC) and Mini Rifle World Shoot Championship, held in Znojmo, Czech Republic.

This marks Sri Lanka’s first individual medal at a world championship in practical shooting, marking a milestone for the country’s shooting sports.

Liyanage competed in the PCC discipline alongside teammates Daniel Kao and Sandil Kottegoda, standing out among 1,095 elite shooters from over 64 countries.

Liyanage secured his place on the podium by displaying exceptional skill, discipline and composure, with the gold and silver medals going to the United States and Czech Republic respectively.

His achievement at such a young age is a personal triumph and symbolises the growing potential of Sri Lanka’s budding athletes – and it has placed the nation on the global map of practical shooting.
